Photographic Arts Lecture

On September 27, the Palo Alto Camera Club, along with the Mid-Peninsula Photo Alliance, will put on a special photographic arts lecture given by Adobe's well-known Senior Digital Imaging Evangelist, Julieanne Kost – website. Ms. Kost will speak about her photographic journey and her use of Photoshop to carry out her artistic vision.

The free lecture will be held at the Palo Alto Children's Theatre, 1305 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto on Tuesday, September 27, at 7:30 pm. Note that space is limited, so put the date on your calendar and plan to come early to get a seat--first come, first served.

Alviso Photowalk - July 2nd

A heads up from Lou Beaudet about a new photography exhibition in Monterey. Here is the description from the Monterey Museum of Art:

"This exhibition is organized from major museum and private collections and will feature vintage prints of Weston’s most famous and admired photographs along with rare images not widely exhibited.

Edward Weston was among the most significant American artists of the twentieth century. The exhibition will span the most prolific decades of his career. Born in Highland Park, Illinois, Weston came to California in 1926, where he began the work for which he is justly famous: sharply-focused black and white photographs of seashells, vegetables, landscapes, portraits and nudes. In 1929, Weston moved to Carmel and created the first of many photographs of the dramatic rocks and trees at Point Lobos. Soon thereafter, he became one of the founding members of Group f/64—a pioneering circle of photographers that included Ansel Adams and Imogen Cunningham. Widely renowned during his lifetime, Weston became the first photographer to receive a Guggenheim Fellowship for experimental work in 1936."

As many people may know, our own Janet Morrison plays the oboe in the Saratoga Symphony. Their next concert is Sunday, January 16, at 3 pm in Saratoga.

From July 1 to July 31, 2010, the Camera Club of Los Altos will display its annual photography exhibit at the Los Altos Library (13 S. San Antonio Road) during library hours. Our members will be showing their best and favorite photos. The photographs will be from various fields of photography so it should be an interesting show.

Also, on July 3 from 2 to 4PM, the club will host our reception. Everyone is welcome to attend. Come and our members, learn about the club, and enjoy refreshments as you enjoy this year's exhibition. And no, we cannot guarantee any showgirls from the Copa Club in Havana. :)

This Fall's Art Photography Exhibit at Filoli (www.Filoli.org) is titled Bay Area Wildlife: Beautiful, Vital, Fragile. If you are interested in receiving an entry packet to submit prints for consideration, please reply to this email and provide your name, mailing address, and phone number. The exhibit will be on display September 14 through October 24, 2010 and is open to b/w and color print photographs.

The Theme: Bay Area Wildlife: Beautiful, Vital, Fragile
The San Francisco Bay Area is home to varied examples of wildlife throughout its bay, ocean, marshland and wooded environs. We seek photographs that explore the beauty and vitality of its subject, as well as the craft and skill of the photographer. Images of animals in the air, land, or sea are welcome, as well as landscape photographs of habitat. Photographic subjects could include birds, mammals, fish, insects, amphibians, arthropods, starfish, jellyfish, or even sponges. We place no limits on your imagination.
The Wildlife Exhibit will consist of the 30 entries juried to be exceptional, finely crafted photographs that reflect the theme. The overall purpose of the exhibit will be to reflect the interdependence of the wildlife surrounding us, to display its beauty, and to draw attention to the importance of preserving this web of life.

Entry
To receive an entry packet containing forms and instructions, please contact Douglas Campbell the exhibition curator at Filoli promptly with your name, mailing address and phone number. These packets will be sent out in June.

Exhibition timeline:

• Entry packets will be sent to artists in June, upon request.

• Entry forms along with up to three image submissions are due by July 31st. Entry photographs will be 11x14 inches or larger, b/w or color prints only, but unrestricted as to capture/print formats and techniques.

• Notification of acceptance will be sent to artists by August 14.

• The exhibit will be displayed and open to the public September 14 – October 24 during Filoli normal hours of operation.

CPID Creative Individual International Competitions

It is a pleasure to announce that the CPID Creative Individual International Competitions are being conducted once again this year. There will be 3 in all, and include both digital capture and slides. The closing dates for the competitions are Saturday, May 15; Thursday, July 15 and Wednesday, September 15. The competitions are open to all PSA individual members, who are in good standing, free of charge.

A web site (www.mdsg.us/2010_ciic) has been established to manage the competitions as well as providing a convenient means for everyone, on a world-wide basis, to participate. There you will find all the necessary information concerning their conduct as well as serving as the means of submitting digital images. Slides must pre-registered, using the web-site, and mailed according to the instructions contained on the web site.

Each entrant may submit one or two images, which must clearly and obviously display “altered reality” adjustments or montages. Slides are limited to those with 2in x 2in (5cm x 5cm) dimensions. The digital image dimensions cannot exceed 1024 pixels wide by 768 pixels high/tall and must be in “jpg” format. The “sRGB” color profile is recommended for best projection.

Awards will be presented to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners as well as a number of Honorable Mentions. Acceptances will be also be given; however, they are not eligible for use in the PSA Stars or Who's Who Program. The results, along with the winning images, will be posted on the Competitions web site.

Everyone is urged and encouraged to participate in these competitions in order to take advantage of one of the benefits offered by CPID. Not only will you have the opportunity to gain recognition for your own work, but enjoy and learn from the efforts of others. Participation can also serve as a means of providing the motivation to expand your knowledge and skills, in addition to opening new photographic visions and vistas.

Nature photographer Bill Atkinson, a founding member of the Macintosh design team for Apple, will talk about his forty-year love affair with nature photography. He will share his approach to his work, his attraction to the inner rock patterns found in his book, "Within the Stone," and his current PhotoCard app, which produces high-resolution photo postcards that can be sent via the iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. Above is the competition results from the April 2010 International Club Image Competition (ICIC) of the Photographic Society of America. While we got some respectable scores, our entries did not place in the awards section.

We having been fairing as well as we have liked in PSA competitions lately. We need a program to review last year's winners and determine how we can elevate our game.

Sarah Mitchell and Pictures on a Cosmic Scale

We all know that Sarah Mitchell's photos are out-of-this-world. But wait to you see these!

Well, Sarah didn't actually take them with her trusty Canon SLR. She is however a key member of the team that created NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, a space telescope designed to study the sun. Dubbed as our "Hubble for the Sun", SDO promises to uncover as many mysteries and amazements for solar physics.

"No solar telescope has ever come close to the combined spatial, temporal and spectral resolution of SDO," says Alan Title of Lockheed Martin, principal investigator of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA), the observatory's main telescope array. "This is possible because of the combination of 4096 x 4096-pixel CCDs with huge dynamic range and a geosynchronous orbit which allows SDO to observe the sun and communicate with the ground around the clock."

Yeah great...but can it avoid clipping the highlights?

David Morrison on the End of the World

Our own David Morrison is giving a lecture on the end of the world tomorrow night!

Actually, the lecture is tomorrow night, not the end of the world. He is giving a public lecture on April 21 at 7 pm at Foothill College on the fear of doomsday and the mythology surrounding December 21, 2012 -- including public reactions (anger, threats of suicide, etc.). He hopes he can draw some lessons about how science is misunderstood and how public confusion and fear can be exploited by unscrupulous people and organizations.

The lecture is free, but parking at Foothill is $2. Details here at Foothill College website.

David is the director of NASA's Lunar Science Institute and director of the Carl Sagan Center for the Study of Life at the SETI Institute. A world-renowned planetary scientist and expert in the field of asteroid impacts, he is the author of more than 155 technical papers and has published a dozen popular books and introductory textbooks. He is the recipient of numerous awards for his scientific and educational work, including the Sagan Medal of the American Astronomical Society for public communication.

March 18th is our annual awards dinner. It is a great time to socialize and swap our favorite photography stories, tips and techniques. Since it is a potluck dinner, please bring your favorite dish to share. Note: food preparation facilities are limited so please cook everything in advance.

Please RSVP to Niki's email on your attendance and what dish you are bringing. This event is for current members only.

Saratoga Symphony Concert

Did you know that our own Janet Morrison plays the oboe in the Saratoga
Symphony? Well, the next free Saratoga Symphony concert is on Sunday,
March 14, at 3 pm in Saratoga.  Details in the "read more".

The concert program is entertaining!   A young, talented Bay Area
pianist will perform 2 pieces with our orchestra at this concert.

This orchestra program music, "An Exotic Touch," is interesting with
its striking melodies and rhythms.  The conductor, Dr. Jason Klein,
always talks to the audience about each piece before we perform it.

Come out and support Janet and the entire symphony.

Digital Nature Photography Course

Our friends at the Palo Alto Camera Club are sponsoring again with the City of Palo Alto a nature photography course that will talk about nature photography as well as some great places to shoot nature photos in the Bay Area.

It looks like you don't need to go to the Serengeti to get great Nature photos. They are to be had here, too; though you might not find a giraffe walking through the streets of Palo Alto. Potentially, a mountain lion...but not a giraffe.

February and March Meeting Plans

February 18 – 7pm (meeting will start promptly to cover a full program)
Tonight’s program will offer a mix of administrative information sharing & ideas soliciting, an educational program and a competition:

Niki Muller will kick off with the welcome and administrative matters (including 2010 directions!). 2010 annual membership fees are due at this meeting ($30 for Individuals, $40 for Couples).

Lou Beaudet will provide the educational content, an illustrated talk on, “Aerial Photography & How I Edit It Creatively”

Club Photo Competition – club members will judge & select up to 6 images to submit to the April 1 PSA competition

March 18 – 7pm

The Annual Awards Dinner. Niki has graciously offered to hold this Potluck event at her home (Portola Valley). The Club's 2009 winning digital & print images will be judged once again to decide the best of the best. This will be the must-attend social event of the season (photography vests, optional). Please hold the date on your calendars!

We have lots of new programming and planning ideas for 2010 that we’re excited to share with you. Niki Muller will be asking for your thoughts on them during our February 18th meeting (7 – 9:30pm @ the Hillview Community Center). The more members who participate to shape program ideas for the coming year, the more lively and interesting the activities roadmap we can pull together.
